Knife Specialist (A Shift)

JOB PURPOSE
Responsible for implementing a hands-on knife skills training program for new employees within a specific area of
a pork facility harvesting 22,500 animals per day. Coach, support, and follow up with new and existing on the
effective knife sharpening skills, including efficient trimming, and boning techniques necessary to produce
products to company specifications while ensuring employees work safely in assigned roles.
RESPONSIBILITIES & TASKS
Ability to lead classroom training sessions for general knife skills, use of personal protective equipment,
sharpening techniques, and steel maintenance including a straight steel and mousetrap
• Evaluate trainee progress and maintain records of trainee’s progress and achievements
• Ability to communicate and collaborate with all levels of management within the organization
• Mentors and communicates effectively with all employees, provides direction, instructions, and
feedback based on the experience level of the employee
• Follows up and provides appropriate feedback and recognition based on level of performance
• Complete understanding of primal cuts specific to departmental lines
• Knowledge and understanding of personal protective required for knife positions

REQUIREMENTS

• High school diploma required and some college preferred with course work in food/meat science,
business administration/management, education or other related field.
• Work experience in a manufacturing facility, food service, retail, or related field. Meat industry
experience is a plus
• Experience with Microsoft Office suite
• English required. Bi-lingual a plus
• Experience with a Learning Management System (LMS) a plus

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:: While performing the duties of this job, the employee will work in a
processing plant production floor setting and minimal time in an office setting. The plant
environment will include wet or humid conditions (non-weather related), extreme cold and heat
(non-weather related), working near moving mechanical parts, and exposure to airborne
particles, chemicals, and gases at low concentrations. The noise level in the work environment
can be loud when in the production area and requires hearing protection.
NORMAL WORK SCHEDULE: The schedule of this position is in alignment with the plant
production schedule which is normally a 40 to 50-hour work week with Saturdays required if
production is scheduled.
