In this vital role you will have a chance to lead vivarium operations and empower the therapeutic areas to develop new medicines in areas such as oncology, cardiometabolic disease, and inflammation. The successful candidate will be a passionate people leader, mentor, strategically minded, and excellent collaborator with high ethical and organizational standards. This position will report to the Attending Veterinarian or ATO CM site head.
Key responsibilities include:
- Lead a team in vivarium grounded in a culture of trust, personal growth, high performance, safety, and the Amgen values
- Maintain and improve the programs to retain, develop, and recruit highly productive Operations teams that empower Amgen’s science through coaching, training, and evaluation
- Maintain a culture of continuous improvement by integrating internal data and industry trends
- Contribute to the development and lead implementation of vivarium policies and procedure, e.g. disaster planning, cage wash, security, receiving, sanitation, safety, ergonomics, and all aspects of vivarium operations
- Subject matter expert on vivarium operations including animal care, housing systems, cage wash, sanitation, autoclaves, biological safety cabinets, etc.
- Familiar with industry trends and proactively recommend program improvements
- Develop and implement programs to measure and improve operational efficiencies
- Foster relationships within the Comparative Medicine department to design and execute plans that meet departmental goals including veterinary, regulatory/IACUC, 3Rs, and scientific needs while maintaining operational efficiencies
- Proactively strengthen relationships across departments that depend on the vivarium to develop new medicines and allied functions that support the vivarium such as facilities, safety, HR, etc.
- Recommend and oversee vivarium resources with allocation based on Amgen scientific priorities
- Be a key contributor to meeting and exceeding requirements and standards set by USDA, AAALAC, and other agencies
- Proactively guide and develop practical solutions to life cycle manage infrastructure, capital equipment, and team compositions/capabilities to effectively meet the organization needs on both a day-to-day and long-term strategic basis

Basic Qualifications:
Doctorate and 4 years of related experience
Or
Master's degree and 7 Years of related experience
Or
Bachelor's degree and 9 years of related experience
And
Broad knowledge of leading and / or state of the art principles and theories in discipline and basic knowledge of related and adjacent disciplinary areas
And
Understands broader organizational goals and business priorities in relation to therapeutic program / work group
Preferred Qualifications:
- Advanced vivarium related certifications such as AALAS (LATG), ILAM, or VOE Lean Six Sigma belts
- Additional training in business and management such as an MBA, CMAR, or similar training
- Working experience with veterinary and in vivo scientific teams
- Proven track record of leading and developing vivarium teams
- Strong working knowledge of animal research regulations, ethics, and industry best practices
