The Laboratory Technician 1 is responsible for performing accurate analysis of wine, juice, and spirits in a timely manner, reporting all inconsistencies and irregular data to the Laboratory Supervisor or the Laboratory Shift Lead. They must also work safely, following all chemical safety and company safety policies while at work.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Perform routine analysis on wine and juice
  • Perform non-routine analyses such as: copper and sorbate
  • Accurately record analysis and report any out-of-spec analysis to the Laboratory Shift Lead and Laboratory Supervisor
  • Ensure that analysis is accurate by re-running out-of-spec samples and checking that the analysis matches the history or matches the new result
  • Understand the hazards of chemicals used in Laboratory
  • Calibrate and check lab equipment and notify the Laboratory Supervisor and Laboratory Shift Lead if issues exist
  • Keep Laboratory clean and presentable for potential clients
  • Work on special projects as assigned by the Laboratory Supervisor


QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A bachelor’s degree (B.S.) or one to two years of related experience is desired
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Strong organizational, problem-solving, and analytical skills
  • Versatility, flexibility, and a willingness to work within constantly changing priorities with enthusiasm
  • Ability to work as a team or individually, as the situation requires
  • Ability to follow SOPs to complete an analysis or solution preparation with minimal supervision
  • Acute attention to detail
  • Proven ability to handle multiple projects and meet deadlines
  • Demonstrated ability to calculate figures and amounts
  • Working knowledge of statistical analysis of data, laboratory instrumentation and troubleshooting, and wine laboratory analysis
  • Ability to understand and follow written and verbal instructions
  • Knowledge of wines and wine production desired
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret technical procedures
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to do the following:

  • Walk, kneel, bend, and stand
  • Ability to work long hours during peak periods
  • Ability to lift and/or move up to 60 pounds
  • Climb stairs


WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • Work is mainly performed both in a normal lab environment, and in/outdoors
  • Noise levels are usually moderate but may be moderate to high at times
  • A percentage of work time may be spent in a wine warehouse and cellar where temperatures are cool and noise level is usually moderate.
  • Floors may be wet and slippery; proper footwear is required.
