Summary:

The Denver Post is looking for a motivated business reporter to write thoroughly reported stories that appeal to both a mass audience and sophisticated business readers. Although commercial real estate is the primary focus of this position, our three-person team covers a host of subjects under the broad umbrella of business. The successful candidate must have strong news judgment and will be expected to break news about commercial and industrial development in Denver and the greater metro area. You will need to have experience and a passion for scouring public records for the next big project, as well as developing sources in the business community. Our team writes both shorter, daily stories and broader enterprise pieces that put projects and trends into context. Denver Post reporters must understand and implement SEO techniques to ensure content reaches the largest online audience, and use all the data tools available to them to inform story choices.

What you will do:

  • Develop story ideas in coordination with assignment editor, rewriting copy as necessary

  • Research, observe surroundings and conduct interviews over the telephone and in person to gather pertinent information for news stories

  • Interact with colleagues in a professional manner

  • Organize information and write an accurate, clear, interesting and grammatically correct story while meeting deadlines

  • Produce stories of varying complexity and form

  • Seek out and report news for immediate publication on the Post’s digital platforms or for print publications

  • Use digital tools to report and promote Denver Post material

  • Request appropriate photos and graphics for stories; work closely with visual journalists to provide clear explanations of assignments; shoot photos and videos when necessary and transmit them promptly for digital publication

What you will bring:

  • Reporting, writing and editing skills, including knowledge of AP style

  • Strong news judgment

  • Knowledge of digital storytelling methods

  • Ability to cultivate sources

  • Knowledge of analytics and how to use them in decision making

  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism or a related field or equivalent experience

  • Ability to multi-task and work quickly to meet deadlines

  • Valid driver's license and reliable transportation required

The hourly wage is $19.60-$34.28. Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to education, work experience, time in role, certifications, etc. In addition to your salary, MediaNews Group offers a comprehensive benefits package, and 401K plan (all benefits are based on eligibility).
