Summary
The Lloyd Veterinary Medical Center (LVMC) within the College of Veterinary Medicine at Iowa State University is now accepting applications for the position of Manager, Clinical Support in the Small Animal Hospital. This role involves coordinating clinical service activities and overseeing the scheduling and supervision of hospital staff, including veterinary technicians, animal caretakers, and student workers, to ensure high-quality animal care in a teaching environment.
Key responsibilities include:
- Coordinating the scheduling and execution of medical, diagnostic, and surgical procedures for patients.
- Reviewing equipment and facility needs, evaluating inventory and special order requests, and reporting deficiencies to the Associate Director of Hospital Operations. The incumbent will also develop plans to address these deficiencies.
- Assisting veterinary technicians in teaching and training students in various aspects of veterinary medicine and providing support to technicians in evaluating and giving feedback on student performance during rotations.
- Hiring, supervising, training, and coordinating technical support services.
This position plays a critical role in maintaining the operational excellence of the Small Animal Hospital, ensuring both the welfare of the animals and the educational experience of the students.
This position will work independently and collaboratively with the hospital’s clinical services and administrators in the Lloyd Veterinary Medical Center (VMC) and Veterinary Clinical Sciences (VCS). Although routine hospital business hours are from 8:00 am – 5:00 pm on Monday through Friday, the LVMC is open for patient care 24 hours/day, 7 days/week. The incumbent may be asked to answer urgent questions from employees supervised and/or meet with employees during off-peak times, weekends and holidays. Likewise, the manager will ensure that staffing needs are met after-hours, on weekends, or holidays to meet the needs of the service as necessary.
It is essential that this position has a strong knowledge of veterinary technical duties and an understanding of the coordination of services in a hospital setting. The successful candidate will have a strong work ethic, be self-motivated, able to work independently or as a team, maintain confidentiality, and be detail oriented. Excellent interpersonal skills, organizational qualities, and effective oral and written communications are necessary to be successful in this position. The successful candidate will possess the ability to work with and directly supervise the work of others. The ideal candidate will have professional maturity with a leadership style that contributes to a positive culture, and have a compassionate, and empathetic nature towards the clients and patients of the Lloyd Veterinary Medical Center.
