We are seeking a highly motivated and talented Scientific Investigator with expertise in immunology and virology to join our Infectious Disease Research team in Upper Providence, PA. The Infectious Disease team is part of R&D with Vaccines Research, one of the three therapeutically aligned R&D areas at GSK. We are responsible for the discovery of novel therapeutic approaches & targets to treat infectious diseases that threaten our health and progressing them to clinical proof of concept studies.

The available position supports target validation through drug discovery and early clinical development within Infectious Diseases Research. You would be responsible for conducting Infectious Disease related work in molecular and cell biology in the progression of drug discovery projects for treating Hepatitis B virus or respiratory viruses. The successful candidate will have extensive knowledge and hands-on research expertise in hepatic and respiratory viral disease. They will be science driven, familiar with most cell and molecular biology techniques and instrumentation, one who can assume personal accountability and keen to learn through experience to advance in their career.

Key accountabilities:

  • Design and perform experiments to characterize and progress novel treatments (e.g. immune-therapeutics, host targets, direct acting, oligos, biologics) for viral infections including cell culture, flow cytometry, ELISA, high content imaging, molecular biology, and other laboratory techniques.
  • Provide anti-viral assay support for developing and advancing programs for HBV and/or respiratory viral diseases, whether with small molecule or novel large molecule approaches.
  • Independently execute laboratory experiments, conduct statistically supported data analysis, and deliver results in a timely manner to enable informed decision making.
  • Establish and validate in vitro cellular models of disease using primary human cell cultures and other cell types
  • Analyze experimental data, prepare reports, and present to project teams.
  • Clearly communicate study results and impact in written form and at internal and external meetings.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to support drug discovery projects.
  • Maintain accurate records of experiments and results in electronic laboratory notebooks.
  • Stay abreast of the latest scientific literature in infectious disease to apply new technologies and techniques for scientific delivery.
Basic Qualifications:
  • PhD with 2+ years or MS with 5+ years, relevant scientific discipline (e.g. Microbiology, Immunology, Cell and Molecular Biology, Biochemistry) or related field years' experience in a research setting.
  • Two or more years of experience in primary cell culture and immunophenotypic assays such as ELISA, MSD, cellular imaging, molecular biology, flow cytometry, or similar techniques.
  • Prior experience in handling viral infectious agents such as HBV, HRV, RSV, and/or other viruses.
  • Knowledge of viral and immunological techniques applicable to studying immunoinflammation and/or exhaustion associated with chronic disease.
  • Demonstrated productivity through laboratory contributions to multiple research projects.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • PhD with 4+ years post-doctoral experience in hepatic or respiratory virus disease.
  • Knowledge of the immune response to viral infection and impact on human disease.
  • Previous experience in hepatic virus infection models.
  • Knowledge of molecular techniques such as CRISPR/siRNA/shRNA methodology for gene modulation.
  • Prior assay development and validation experience
  • Demonstrated capability to address critical path biology activities of research projects.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with strong track record of scientific publications.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in team and matrix environments.
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills, able to resolve technical challenges and deliver consistent results efficiently in a timely manner.
  • Self-motivated with desire to carry out independent hypothesis generation and testing.
  • Understanding of drug discovery via previous experience in biotech/pharmaceutical projects.
  • Experience with drug target evaluation and validation.
  • Ability to adapt to changing priorities.
