Job Summary:
The Manufacturing Engineer will develop and support the manufacturing processes for products intended for the gas and liquid chromatography markets. Using a solid background in chemistry, fluid dynamics, thermodynamics, and engineering fundamentals this role will be responsible for development of new manufacturing processes as well as improvements in quality, safety, productivity, and efficiency of existing manufacturing processes. This position will be filled as a level II or III pending the successful candidate's commensurate education and experience.
Job Duties:
- Lead the process engineering efforts in assigned area including setting and executing strategy and coordinating the efforts of junior engineers, where applicable.
- Sustaining engineering: Independently monitor, identify process issues and support assigned production areas to insure safe manufacturing processes, high quality products and on time delivery.
- New product introduction: Independently carry out the evaluation and scale-up of new and/or existing product manufacturing technologies and processes. Perform experiments and collect data to support products within assigned area.
- Process improvement: Independently identify opportunities for process and productivity improvements. Develop, validate and introduce process and productivity improvements. Assist in the development of process improvement strategies.
- Document experiments and procedures. Review documentation for accuracy and completeness. Write experience reports detailing experimental design, results and conclusions, and circulate for review and comment with the appropriate departments. Communicate progress on projects through reports and at staff meetings. Insure documentation in the assigned area is kept up to date.
- Train manufacturing personnel on new procedures, processes, raw material testing and specifications, product handling, equipment, product manufacture, or final product testing and specifications.
- Keep current with methods applicable to field by attending seminars, workshops, and continuing education.
- Practice safe working procedures and follow guidelines specified by the Environmental Health and Safety Department. Understand process safety requirements and the safe handling of materials under the domain of the job responsibilities.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
Education/Experience Options:
This position requires a Bachelor’s degree or higher in Chemical Engineering or other related science with at least 5 years of related experience or the equivalent combination of education and experience to be considered for a level II. Additional experience and/or education are required for higher level positions.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
- Ability to apply fundamental concepts of chemistry, thermodynamics, and fluid flow to chromatography applications.
- Ability to handle work of moderate complexity with excellent understanding of core responsibilities and processes. Ability to select work and operate with minimal direction.
- Proven troubleshooting and analytical skills with ability to solve complex problems.
- Demonstrated knowledge and experience with the application of statistical methods and techniques
- Ability to work well with others in a team environment and regularly contribute to project team and initiatives.
- Good use of computers, including spreadsheets, word processing, statistics, and database applications. Proficiency with CAD a plus.
- Good oral and written communication skills.
- Experience in process engineering, process development, or product development.
- Knowledge of process statistics and problem-solving methodologies.
